General Information

What Is A Domain Name?
A Domain Name is a web address, sometimes referred to as a URL (Uniform Resource Locator) that points to a web page on a web server. The web address "technipixel.com" is a domain name.

What is .COM, .ORG and .NET Mean?
At the end of every domain name there is an extension. This extension is how a domain name is identified by a particular category. There are many extensions besides the main three. The extension .COM means commercial sites; .ORG means non-profit organizations; and .NET means networks.

What Is A Sub-Domain?

A sub-domain is a subdirectory type of web address. It is always nested within an already existing domain name. Example; labs.technipixel.com has the sub-domain of "labs." It works just like a regular web address. It is often used to run separate sites within a site such as forums etc.

Why Do I Need A Domain Name?

If you want to have your own web site with your own special brand name, then purchasing a domain name is the best way to go. There are free services online that offer sub-domains, but you have to put up with their main domain being attached to your name.

How It All Works
Before you can begin developing a web site, you need to come up with a short, easy to learn domain name. After purchasing your domain name, you must then find a web host where your pages will be stored. They will need that domain name to setup your web site account. If your domain name was purchased with a separate domain registry that is not your web host, then you will need to set the DNS (Domain Name Server Address) to pint to your web host. Once all that is setup, then your site can be accessed with your domain name.

Acquiring A Domain Name

Where Do I Purchase A Domain Name?

There are many domain registrar's to buy domain names such as goDaddy, Domain Discover, Network Solutions. However, your web host may also allow you to purchase the domain directly from them.

Which Is Better? - With A Web Host or Domain Registry?

It really is a matter of preference! Purchasing a domain name with a registry gives you more control in case you want to change web hosts. I have experienced a client losing a domain because the web host controlled the domain. However, sometimes it's just easier for the web host to take care of it. But, if you decide to move your site, then you have to go through the "domain transfer" process (see below).

How Much Do Domains Cost?

On average, domain registries charge anywhere from $5 to $35 for a domain name. It all depends on what comes with it. Domain registrations are paid for by year or multiple years at a time.

TechniPixel's Domain Name Options

Your Own Registry (Recommended)
As much as we want your business, we recommend that you purchase your domain separately from TechniPixel, this way you really control it by paying for it and maintaining it. It gives you a peace of mind if our relationship with you ends.

Purchase Domain Through TechniPixel

By purchasing your domain through us, we charge $20 per domain, per year which includes domain name and registration privacy that hides all contact information from the internet.

Transfer A Domain Name

If you already own a domain with another web host, you can transfer it to a new registry (which cost you the registries renewal fee) or you can transfer it to TechniPixel for $20 renewal fee for one year.

The process involved in transferring domains goes like this...

• Your registry or TechniPixel (aka "us") initiates a "Domain Transfer"

• The other party sends you or us an "Authorization Code (AC)"

• Then you (us) enters the "AC" into the respective domain form.

• The other party then releases the domain.

• Then you (us) accepts the transferred domain.
